Perception of NYSC Corp Members to Professional Association Membership in Nigeria: Study of the NYSC-Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) Partnership

Abstract
 

This study examined the perception of NYSC Corp members to professional association membership in Nigeria with an in-depth study of the NYSC – NIM (Chartered) partnership. The study had a study population of 5,728 comprising prospective and inducted members of the NIM (Chartered). A researcher- made instrument, the Questionnaire on Perception of NIM Membership by Corp Members (QPNMCM) was designed with 20 items. Any item with it was a score of 50% and above was assumed an agreement with the perceived statement and less than 50% was rejected .Respondents’ perceptions were sought on the emergent causes of membership of professional association by Corp members and the benefits of membership of such professional association. Emergent causes of professional membership include: finance (cost of registering for the qualifying examination, peer/family pressure, interest, career prospects , relevance of the association to the individual , publicity (public awareness) of the profession , relevance of the professional certification in securing employment after National service , success /failure rates of past participants in qualifying examinations amongst others. Conclusions were drawn from the study and recommendations proffered.
