Abstract

The abuse and misuse of antibiotics constitute a major health care problem which can lead to the emergence of resistance to antibiotics and increased health care costs. An investigation of the pattern of use of antibiotics in hospitals can be used to assess the extent of antibiotic misuse. To determine the pattern of use of antibiotics in a tertiary health care setting with specific focus on assessing whether relevant investigations were carried out and used as a guide for antibiotics prescription. A prospective cross-sectional assessment of the pattern of use of antibiotics was conducted among 511 randomly selected cohort at a tertiary health care facility located in Uyo, Southern Nigeria. Of the 511 cohort studied, relevant laboratory investigations was requested in only 96(18.80%). Furthermore, only the investigations of 80 (15.66%) were used as a guide for the prescription of antibiotics. The most frequently prescribed class of antibiotics were the Fluoroquinolones [188(26.40%)], followed by the Penicillins [175(24.58%)].There is a need to strengthen the curriculum of continuing professional development of practitioners to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to prescribe rationally.
