Abstract

The focus of the research and development project discussed in this paper is to design, formalize, implement, and deliver a cost-effective, user oriented, useful and usable tool (called RoboTown) for easy use by middle school children and their teachers. The research team began with the goal of making a middle school student friendly research tool to seamlessly introduce the concepts of information systems to learners through robotics and electronics. The completed project includes a fully autonomous rover-style robot built using 3D printed material around an Arduino Mega microcontroller, along with a fully functional companion website that serves as the main source of the lessons and includes; instructional videos, interactive programming lessons, instructional resources, as well as links to download all the material for offline use in a computer laboratory.
